Firs, Abies species are closely related to Cedars. Like Cedars they have needle like foliage, & dry unarmed cones. The limber branches & foliage shed ice & snow. These conifers inhabit cold snowy or mountain climates in the Northern Hemisphere. In California Firs grow in moist mountain climates. Firs are one of the most popular “Christmas trees” & are farmed on a large scale as such. Firs are also important timber trees. In general these trees don’t like to live in the desert.
